Getting a coop

When I started doing research on chicken coops, I realized pretty quickly that this was not something I was going to build myself. I’m somewhat capable with tools, but constructing something like a chicken coop is beyond my skills and tools. There’s no doubt I could build it, but my concerns were that it would not look very good and it would fall apart after not too long. Also it might be somewhat dangerous to the chickens if they stepped on an exposed nail or chicken wire.

So I started looking into buying a coop. First, I looked online and saw the variety of coop styles available. But I had trouble finding something that fit my budget, looked the way I want, and would accommodate the 4 bantam chicks I was looking to get. I also looked on Craigslist for people re-selling local coops, but most of what I saw wouldn’t quite work either.

But when I was on Craigslist, I found Carolina Coops, a chicken coop manufacturer located in the Raleigh-Durham area. After talking to the owner and looking at some sample coops, I feel confident that he will be able to construct a chicken coop that is sturdy, functional and looks good. The owner seems very knowledgeable about chicken keeping, so I’ll be relying on him to guide me when selecting features and materials for my coop.
