Twitter “Weekly” Updates for 2010-09-03

  • Two of the #chickens still broody. The past 3 nights I've lifted them out of the nestbox to put them up on the perch. They are quite ornery. #

  • Once again, 1 egg yesterday. After dark, I've been taking the 2 broody #chickens out of their nestbox and putting them on their perch. #
  • @jackie_blkwell I really can't block the nest boxes – I have 2 other chickens, 1 of which is laying. And not ready to deal with chicks yet. in reply to jackie_blkwell #
  • Chickens laid 9 eggs this week after 18 the week before. I guess with half of them gone broody, that was to be expected. #
  • This letter writer has some good points, but I mostly disagree http://t.co/yzQnAEy #chickens #
  • 7th straight day of just 1 egg. My egg reserves are down to 2, the lowest it's been in about 3 weeks. #
  • @Mom2Punkadus I've got 2 broodies, and I'm not sure if both of the other 2 are laying, or just 1. It's hard to tell those 2 apart. in reply to Mom2Punkadus #
  • @mendiola32 As recently as less than 2 weeks ago I got 3 eggs in 5 out of 6 days from my 4 hens. in reply to mendiola32 #
  • @mendiola32 Two of them have gone broody, they are spending the whole day in the nestbox. Apparently the Brahma breed can get rather broody. in reply to mendiola32 #

  • Couple of broody hens… #chickens http://twitpic.com/2h7t1a #
  • Total of 18 eggs last week, up from 15 last week and 6 the week before. #chickens #
  • Two of my pullets (now 5 weeks old) are sitting in a nest box together, even though it is after dark and there are no eggs under them. #
  • Oops, realized I wrote "5 weeks old", but meant "5 months old". It would be pretty amazing if they were laying at 5 weeks! #
  • @jackie_blkwell Thanks for the advice! I moved them up to the roosting pole. They weren't too cranky about it. in reply to jackie_blkwell #
  • @WendyENThomas I made a quiche last week with ham & mozzarella, and will probably try the same recipe using bacon instead of ham this week. in reply to WendyENThomas #
  • Bacon mozzarella quiche made with 6 bantam eggs! #chickens http://twitpic.com/2hky5u #
  • Wow, over 300 followers. Thanks everyone! #
  • Kind of disappointed, only 1 egg today, first 1-egg day in over a week. The chickens are spending a lot of time in the nest boxes though. #
  • Another 1-egg day. Only 6 eggs in the past 4 days (2 in the past 2) after getting 11 in a 4-day span last week. Should I be concerned? #
  • .@robynski I looked all over the coop, and did not find any eggs. This week, 2 of the chickens are spending almost all day in the nestboxes. #
  • @robynski Thanks for the tip and the compliment. I'll keep looking for those eggs. in reply to robynski #

Eggcellent surprise!

The chickens, now about 19 weeks old, had been acting kind of strangely for about a week — spending good portions of the day in the henhouse, despite the heat. They seemed to be exploring the two nestboxes with more frequency. Then I went away for a few days, and when I came back, I looked in the nestboxes, and saw two eggs!

So I fried them up for a small snack (the eggs are rather small), and they were delicious. Over the past 3 days, they’ve laid 2 more eggs. I think only one of the chickens is laying right now, but I think all 4 are going into the henhouse while the laying is going on. So I can’t wait until all 4 start laying. Then it will be time to break out the egg recipes!

Couple of new videos

Last week I shot a couple of quick videos of the chickens, which are now 4 months old.

The first video shows how noisy they can get. They haven’t been making that much noise, but on occasion, one of them seems to get riled up about something:

The second video just shows them scratching around outside the coop:
